WHAT'S THE DEAL WITH
ARAMID?

A GUIDE TO UNDERSTANDING FLIGHT SUITS

Aramid is a class of synthetic fiber used extensively in military and aerospèce applications. Aramid fabric is extremely durable and heat-resistant thanks in part to its chemical structure.

The name Aramid is shorthand for:

" AROMATIC

In chemistry, this means atoms arranged in circular structures with a ring of strong resonance bonds.

POLYAMIDE "

This is a polymer with repeating units linked together in long chains with amide bonds.

These ring structures form chains of molecules that are alinged with the length of Aramid fibers, so the chemical bonds add to the fiber strength.

THE RESULT:

Aramid products are incredibly durable, and can take a lot of abuse.

Aramid cord can have a tensile strength-to-weight ratio up to 5x stronger than steel.

Woven para-aramid is used to reinforce racing tires and ship hulls, and is the material inside most modern body armor.

Aramid also has excellent electrical and heat resistance, and is the main component of a wide range of personal protective equipment (PPE).

Specialized meta-aramid fabrics are so flame resistant that they will not melt or ignite in normal levels of oxygen.

And aramid manages to accomplish all this while still being light weight enough for aerospace applications, where every additional gram counts.

ARAMID vs NOMEX®

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?

Nomex® is Aramid.

More specifically, Nomex® is the branded name of meta-aramid products made by DuPont.

All meta-aramid flight suits have the same heat-resistance properties as Nomex®

All flight suits are built to military specification YACL-WP PD 99-01 R and have exactly the same features.

HOWEVER,

ONLY NOMEX FLIGHT SUITS ARE

NIR COMPLIANT*

NIR compliant flight suits mimic the same radiation levels as the ambient environment, making them harder to detect using near-infrared imaging (NIR) technology.

An NIR compliant suit is essential for flying combat missions, but isn't as neccessary if your flight hours are spent in friendly territory.
