Kyle Murao of Quora writes about the interesting history of camouflage patterns and obscuring weapons, vehicles and soldiers. Once the range finder became common equipment, and weapon range continued to increase, the need to obscure your location became more important.

Around this same time the Cubism artistic movement demonstrated that painting a subject with various pieces can help break up a shape. Understanding how to confuse this new technology with various shapes kick-started camo patterns that have evolved to what we use today.
