I was selected to test and evaluate the Propper 4PV concealment vest. Before receiving the vest, I was supplied a form for measurements so that the vest would fit appropriately. Normal vest measurements can be mildly confusing however the supplied sheet was simple and to the point. A few short weeks later I received the 4PV at my department. Upon inspect of the vest out of the box, I noticed four separate panels (two rectangular panels and two side panels). After a short set-up period the vest was adjusted to fit where I wanted it. The meat and potatoes of this vest are in the side panels, which independently move from the front and rear panel. This eliminates the vest riding up and pinching; that is a problem with traditional two panel vests. The side panels stop the side gaps that are present in traditional vests. Overall the design of this vest is genius by providing a solution to a long time comfort and protection problem. My next stop was at the range where I tested out shooting while wearing the vest. My expectations were surpassed with the vest independently moving from all shooting positions. I tried to find a position where the vest hindered my shooting form, however I failed. I moved on to the gym and did several different workouts to see if the vest would bind or cause discomfort and again was surprised by the outstanding performance. Running on the treadmill for a mile and never feeling the need to tug on the vest from riding up was a pleasant change of pace. Out on patrol this vest allows for ease of movement and comfort for those long days in the field. Overall this is the best concealable vest that I have ever used. Great job Propper!
The 4PV Vest is a durable product and it definitely endured the ultimate weather test in the heat. The design was not something I was used to, but it slowly grew on me and performed well. There were a lot of moving parts, so applying the vest by throwing it over your head and quickly getting it on was not as easy or convenient as I had hoped. This is a vest that you need to properly apply and make sure the panels are seated correctly for comfort before you Velcro up. My sizing was good which made the vest very comfortable. It was a little thicker and bulkier than what I am used to wearing, which made it a little more difficult for me to cross draw to pull my Taser. Although the vest was bulky and heavier than what I'm used to, I was completely impressed with how breathable it was. It withstood the ultimate weather test which was wearing it in 115 degree weather. Let's be honest, that weather is super uncomfortable, but this vest breathed super well! No wet mesh after I took it off, which meant no smell. I just hung it up to dry and it stayed in my locker until the next day for easy storage and maintenance. The panels were very flat and they didn't conform to my body as much as I had hoped, but the Velcro was the strongest I had ever experienced, so once it's on, it wasn't moving. Overall, I thought this was a good vest. If I had to choose though, I may not purchase one in the future with all those moving parts.
I had the opportunity to test the Propper 4PV (4 Panel Vest). When the vest arrived, I took it out of the box and noticed there were separate front and backs panels and two side panels. There were also side straps and shoulder straps that accompanied the panels. This vest design is a clear departure from the conventional 2-piece, clam shell design most law enforcement officers are used to. I am personally on my fourth ballistic vest with my department, all of which are the conventional style. Prior to receiving the vest, I had to send Propper specific measurements that they needed to fit the vest. When I first tried on the vest, it took a little more adjusting due to the four separate panels that needed to be secured into place. Per the directions, the side panels need to be positioned specifically to optimize ballistic coverage. As I donned the vest more, this adjustment process became easier. Once the vest is assembled, taking it on and off was easy. It required detaching one of the front straps and sliding the vest over your head. During my first shift with the vest, it was very apparent that this vest provided more comfort and maneuverability in relation to a conventional 2-panel vest. The four panels really moved independently of one another and moved with the body. I also found that the panels stayed in place and the vest did not ride up. It also did not pinch. With any new piece of equipment/gear, it took a bit to get used to the feel of the four separate panels. The side panels did seem to offer extra ballistic protection. The Propper 4PV was also cooler than the current vest that I wear now. This may be due to the design of the carrier. The material on the inside of the carrier (that contacts the body) is a mesh design. This seems to help with airflow. I was able to participate in firearms training with the vest on as well. We shot standing, kneeling and prone. During training, this vest seemed to move with the body better than a conventional vest. If there is one drawback with the vest, it seems like the back panel seems a bit too long. This was most likely due to my counterpart's measuring technique when I was first measured for the vest. I currently have other Propper products that I am extremely happy with. This vest did not disappoint. Overall, this vest is extremely comfortable and functional. I would highly recommend this vest to anyone who is looking for a quality vest.
